Zones of Regulation
Our preparation for adulthood programme
focuses on developing skills and knowledge
to better cope with anxiety. One of the tools
we use to support this is using Zones of
Regulation. This is a tool for the learners to
better understand their feelings, emotions
and energy levels by categorising them into
colours through a visual structure.
The learners are taught that all zones are
okay to experience. It is normal to
experience a range of emotions throughout
the day e.g. tired, happy, excited or angry
depending on the situation we are facing.
Learners are taught to identify strategies to
return to the green zone where they feel
content and calm. Strategies to regulate
are unique to each learner and it could be
having a massage, going to the outdoor
gym, reading a book or listening to calming
music.
Learners are taught 10 concepts throughout
the academic year which enable them to
foster self, social and situational awareness.
The learners are then supported to
complete a 8zones check in9 at the
beginning of each lesson to ensure the they
are in the optimal zone to learn (green).
Every learner is given the time, space and
opportunity to reflect on their emotions in
order for them to enjoy their college
experience.
