Making our orchard accessible for all
At the heart of our site is a historic orchard, a place of wonder and learning.
But right now, it’s out of reach for many: the uneven grass and natural hazards
make it difficult for wheelchair users and those with mobility challenges to
explore.
For children living in our on-site homes, the orchard is part of their back
garden, a place to play, learn, and enjoy nature every day. For them, and many
others, the orchard is more than trees; it’s a space for independence, joy, and
connection.
We want to build a decked wooden walkway through the orchard,
so everyone can enjoy it safely.
The walkway will be:
• Wheelchair accessible
• Stable and safe for those with limited mobility
• Thoughtfully designed to blend with the orchard’s natural beauty
• This small but transformative change will allow everyone to fully immerse
themselves in nature, pick apples, and make memories together.

An accessible orchard will:
• Allow children, young people, and
adults with SEND to explore, play,
and learn safely
• Give residents of our children’s
homes a magical outdoor space in
their own garden
• Enable wheelchair users to take
part in apple picking and seasonal
activities
• Support the growth of our annual
Apple Fest, a much-loved event
that brings together our community
and welcomes local families with
SEND
• Help us open our site for more
inclusive seasonal events throughout
the year
