SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY
Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) provides input through ongoing assessments for
expressive and receptive communication as well as eating, drinking and swallowing
assessments to ensure input provided is meeting the current needs of the individual. Speech
and language therapy is provided through 1:1 sessions and group therapy input. Interventions
are provided both directly and indirectly for the individual.
Speech & Language Therapy Interventions
Sensory Journey - this group follows a sequence of activities that allows individuals to
investigate through taste, smell, touch, sight, hearing and movement whilst using a
Total Communication approach to promote individuals’ understanding and
communication skills allowing choice-making, commenting, responding and
interaction with peers, further developing their social communication skills
Lego Therapy - this is a social communication group that also works in collaboration
with the Occupational Therapy (OT) team to develop social interaction skills such as
eye contact, using person’s name and turn-taking, as well as focusing on OT goals
such as increasing bilateral use of hands and fine motor skills. The SLT focus also looks
to develop functional communication skills for team-working and achieving a
common goal including giving and following instructions, clarifying and modifying
information and directing communication to the appropriate person as well as
developing skills to adopt and adapt to different roles and responsibilities within a
team
Staff training - training for staff teams are also included covering a range of topics
including colourful semantics, intensive interaction, Picture Exchange Communication
Systems (PECS), Communication aids and dysphagia. This training is not a complete
list and further training is provided dependent upon individuals’ clinical need. Speech
and Language Therapy work across the academic and residential settings as well as
working as part of the wider multi-disciplinary teams and colleagues in our external
services such as tertiary communication aid services to explore implementation of
high tech devices, local hospitals and dietician teams
